Accessing Remote Learning at home.
A guide for parents and carers.
WHAT IS ‘REMOTE’ LEARNING?
During the coronavirus (COVID –19) outbreak, schools have been working in new and innovative ways— providing lessons that children can access at home via a computer device (such as a tablet or laptop) and the opportunity to communicate with their teachers via a safe ’discussion’ tool to ensure they continue to be educated and learn. Lessons are closely aligned with termly planning so that children can continue to master the curriculum and make good progress in their learning.
This was a new experience for both staff and pupils. Since March 23rd, staff at Cale Green planned over 1500 online lessons to provide daily opportunities for children to keep in touch with their teacher and learn.
To join in online learning, children need access to internet connection and a laptop, Kindle, IPad or PC.
If your child does not have access to any of these
devices please contact the school office.
Your child can also access online learning from a mobile phone but this is not recommended for the following reasons:
· The majority of mobile phones belong to adults and parental guidance settings may not be activated,
· Children may need to access learning for a few hours each day
· The screen size is very small
· Some documents (such as WORD) do not always open clearly on a mobile phone
When will my child be learning ‘online’ at home?
There are two instances in which children are expected to work online at home. These are:
1. WEEKLY HOMEWORK
From September 2021, all children across the school will be set homework tasks ‘online’. Homework tasks can be found on the class and pupil pages of the school website and will link to English, Maths, spelling and theme curriculum areas.
School has provided all children and families with log in details for the websites children will need to access regularly for homework. In their classes, children will regularly log on to their class pages to practise this skill.
2. SCHOOL ABSENCE DUE TO LOCAL LOCKDOWN /
CLASS OR SCHOOL COVID OUTBEAK / SELF-ISOLATION
Where the school, a class, group or small number of pupils need to self-isolate, or there is a local lockdown requiring pupils to remain at home, school has a clear contingency plan and has the capacity to offer immediate remote education provision to all pupils via the class and pupil pages on the school website.
This guidance should not be followed if your child is off school
due to sickness, either Covid-19 related or other.
All children have been provided with a ‘home-learning’ book. Lessons will use high-quality online and offline resources and teaching and all children will be able to communicate with staff known to them through the discussion area of the class pages in their phase. This will be how teachers assess progress, check work and provide further challenge or explanations if necessary to ensure children’s understanding.
There will be a range of synchronous and asynchronous learning, some lessons will be 'live' and some sessions will be recorded. Each phase will have a range of live check-ins, feedback opportunites and story time sessions each day. We will also ensure that some lessons and activities do not involve screen time.
There is an expectation by school and the government that children will be learning over the equivalent time of a school day with breaks built in at home.
We recognise that younger children and some pupils with SEND may not be able to access remote education without adult support and so we will work with families to deliver a broad and ambitious curriculum for these children.
How can my child access the home-learning?
1. Ensure your child has a device to work from with internet access.
2. Go to the school website: www.calegreen.stockport.sch.uk.
3. Click ‘pupil login’, type in your username and password and click log on.
4. A new tab will open where you will need to enter the verification code: 514087
5. You will find your child’s work under the class discussion and / or homework pages.
6. Work can be set in a variety of ways; you may need to click a link within the class discussion / homework pages that will take you to an external site. These sites are all used in school and are familiar to the children. They have their passwords for these websites. You may also need to download a document. To do this, click download your homework on the right hand side. This will open a download which can then be clicked on to open it. Downloads can be Microsoft, Adobe etc. If the download does not open on your device, please get in touch by leaving a comment using the comment box and we will address your issues as necessary.
7. A weekly timetable can be found on your child's class page which gives an outline for the week and gives a rough timing for the subjects.
School will be offering online training for any parents / carers who need further support accessing the school website and homework content later in the term. Details to follow.
How will the school keep my child safe online?
When lessons are accessed remotely, as the children experienced during the Summer term, staff are expected to maintain professional practice. The school currently uses an online system called ‘School Spider’ which can only be accessed by children from Cale Green via our school website.
All content and communications between school and families / children is monitored by the Local Authority and by the administrators in school.
In addition to the above, the following measures are also in place:
· There will always be at least two members of staff from the phase your child is in delivering online lessons or responding to discussions / questions. These members of staff will be known to your child.
· Children will be taught explicitly and frequently how to access online lessons and the expectations of online behaviour / internet safety
· Children can report any poor online behaviour directly to teachers through the school website—they will be shown how to do this
· The school has a clear policy for internet safety and usage that is understood by all staff
· Lesson content will be selected for variety and be age-appropriate. Clear explanations will be provided for each task.

When children are working remotely it is important for parents and carers to be aware of what they are being asked to do, including the sites they are using and which school staff they are working with.
